My 22 month old daughter, Margaret, used her skills tonight in a real world situation. My husband and I were outside on the pool deck with her. She was on the pool coping and got down on her knees and reached for a leaf in the pool. She leaned a little too far and fell in head first. Before we made it over to her, she had surfaced, rolled over to her back, and was floating like a champ. She was fully clothed (dress, normal diaper) and the water was not heated (72 degrees). It did scare her (and us too), but she was totally fine once we got her dried off. It was certainly a bittersweet event. We were so proud of her for using her skills and it certainly reassured us that we did the right thing in having her go through ISR lessons, but ugh....it is also something we never hoped she would ever have to really use! Lucky for us, we were a maximum of about 10 feet from her and saw the entire thing happen. It was amazing to me though how s ilent the whole episode was. There was not a splash at all. The only sound came from her little cry after she was floating. So I can imagine how if we hadn't been paying attention at the time of the fall, and if she wasn't skilled, we might not have known she had even fallen in. We are so thankful for ISR!!! |

In the summer of 2008, my little guy reached out to fetch a ball that was floating on the side of the pool. He was 22 months at the time and with my husband standing right next to him, Owen slipped, and immediately sunk to the bottom of the pool like a sack of potatoes. At that point I signed Owen and I up for Mommy-and-Me swimming lessons. Owen learned to splash, kick, and sing songs while playing in the water. He learned the water was fun and he no longer had fear of the water however, he had not gained respect for the water. Although he knew how to play, he did not know how to swim and when he stumbled again near our pool, he once again sank and was quickly rescued.
I had heard of ISR from some distant relatives who live in Florida. They considered it a must-do for all pool owners. My husband and I had lengthy discussions regarding the expense and the discipline required to enroll in ISR. We were hesitant to pursue ISR but after reading countless testimonies and watching the video on ISR, we both felt we should give it a try and considered the investment, both monetary and the time involved, an insurance policy for our son. We enrolled Owen in ISR that following spring. A couple of months after completing ISR, my three children and I were outside one evening playing in the back yard. I walked inside to use the restroom, leaving Owen being supervised by his two older sisters. When my oldest came in to grab a book, she left Owen alone with my seven year old, Sophie. Owen began cleaning a rock by the side of the pool as Sophie turned to go sit down on a lounge chair. Suddenly she heard a splash from behind her and looked up to see Owen had fallen head-first into the pool. As she ran to the side of the pool and reached out to grab Owen, he had already surfaced from under the water and flipped onto his back. He made a couple of wincing noises and then flipped onto his belly and swam AROUND her arm to reach the tanning ledge. He then pulled himself up and climbed out of the pool. This entire scenario took place in less than 10 seconds! I am not happy that this incident occurred and I was completely sick with myself for leaving Owen alone with his sisters. However, I can not tell you the relief I feel knowing he has ISR under his belt and then when needed, the skills kicked-in and saved his life. ISR is infant water survival. ISR is an insurance policy. ISR saved my baby’s life. It’s that simple. We cannot thank Janelle and the other ISR instructors enough for their commitment, dedication and loving manner as they teach our babies to float and swim their way to safety. Janelle is truly a gift to the Allen community! My husband and I can not stress enough, if you own a pool and you have little ones, ISR is a MUST!! |
